Task #8 (part#2)

  1. What factors have contributed to population growth? – Death rates, education, female labour market participation
  2. What has been the impact of human population changes? – In some parts of the world like India, they have that sterilized vasectomy so they can not get the females pregnant again, in China they are only allowed to have one child but if the first child is a girl they are allowed to have another child
  3. How does Lauren Singer live a zero waste life? Why could or couldn’t you follow in her steps? – She makes her own beauty products also she makes her own body health products such as deodorant, toothpaste, etc. She also bought most of her groceries in bulk and tried not to use any plastic. She used her left overs that can not be eaten and put them in a decomposing place in her house which after it decomposes she puts in her garden which there she grows her own vegetables. she also hardly ever ate out. I do not think I could ever live a zero waste life because I do like treating myself to eating out sometimes and when me and my family go on trips we tend to eat out because wherever we stay does not have our own kitchen area where we can make our own food. I also do not like homemade beauty products especially homemade deodorant and toothpaste because i have tried it before and i do not like it.
  4. Investigate the life cycle of an everyday item that you threw out today. How much waste are we creating everyday? – We all create so much waste everyday. It is actually quite sad seeing how much waste we create sometimes and also when people do not use the garbage can all the time and litter our environment.
  5. Discuss the amount of waste Bert Fox school produces every day. How much waste do schools in Sask produce? All of Canada? –

Task #8

i learned that you ca bring in electronics and paint to get recycled, but however you do not get a refund for bringing them in. Saskatchewan has 72 depots across the province. What i found interesting was how many depots we have across Saskatchewan. Yes. We are letting people bring in electronics in that they do not use anymore instead of throwing them out and being in landfills because they do not breakdown like a cardboard box. We also allow people to bring in paint that they do not use anymore and that is recycled too. I am not to sure on what else we could do to make things better.

Task #5

1. Describe historic rates of global population growth

It starts off slowly, but after only a few doublings, it grows to enormous numbers because each doubling is more than the total of all earlier growth. In 2008 there were 6.7 billion people on the planet. Collectively, these people consume vast amounts of food, water, raw materials, and energy and in the process produce huge amounts of pollution and wastes.

2. Are populations currently increasing at the same rate everywhere in the world?

No, because in a place in India girls are forced to stay in school till their like 20. In China they have a policy to have one child per family.

3. What are the advantages of low population growth rate or low fertility rate?

more resources to use.

4. What are the disadvantages of high fertility rate?

our resources will get lower and lower because we will be using more if we have a higher population.

5. Describe a demographic transition and identify the challenges.

Demographers examining birth and death rates of western
European countries that became industrialized during
the 19th century developed a hypothesis of population
change known as the demographic transition.

Some analysts believe that most of the world’s
developing countries will make a demographic transition over the next few decades mostly because modern technology can bring economic development and family
planning to such countries.

Do you think you could transition to a zero waste lifestyle? Why or why not? What would you find challenging along the way? (3)

no, it would be difficult for me because I like my tims ad I go to tims like almost everyday and that’s creating waste because of the cup and lid and depends if I buy food the wrapper or cardboard packaging that comes with it. I also buy make up products and face wash products and I don’t like homemade cosmetic products and even homemade deodorant I don’t like.
